Can Character AI Creators See Your Chats? Privacy Guide

Updated 2026-08-06

Character AI says bot creators cannot see your conversations. Learn what the platform collects, when data may be processed, and how to reduce privacy risks.

Quick answer

No. Character AI's official Help Center says a person who creates a Character cannot see the conversations users have with that Character. Other ordinary users also do not receive access to your private chat merely because they use the same bot. However, that does not mean a Character AI conversation is visible only to you under every circumstance.

Character AI's privacy policy, effective July 1, 2026, says the company collects submitted content including chat communications, images, videos and voice data. It describes using information to operate, secure and improve the service, train models, provide support and comply with legal obligations. It also permits disclosure to affiliates, vendors and service providers that need information to perform work such as storage, customer service, analytics, fraud prevention and content moderation. Treat "the Character creator cannot see it" as a specific visibility rule, not a promise of end-to-end encrypted secrecy.

First define who the creator is

The word "creator" causes most of the confusion. It can refer to the user who designed a public Character, the Character AI company and its staff, a third-party service provider, or the generative model itself. Those groups do not have the same permissions.

Person or systemCan they normally see your private chat? What the current official sources establish
User who created the CharacterNoCharacter AI says creators can never see user conversations with their Characters

Law enforcement or legal recipientsPossible under legal processPolicy permits disclosure for warrants, subpoenas, court orders and other legal requirements

The practical answer is therefore: the independent bot author cannot open an inbox of your chats, but the company operates and processes the system that stores them.

What Character AI officially says about bot creators

Character AI's Help Center answer is unusually direct: creators cannot see the conversations users have with their Characters. A creator can design the Character's name, description, greeting, definition, voice and visibility, but the official product does not give that creator a transcript of every user's private interaction.

This remains true when thousands of people chat with the same public Character. Each user's conversation is not published to the creator simply because the creator owns the bot configuration. The creator may see broad popularity or interaction signals available through the product, but those metrics should not be confused with access to identifiable transcripts.

Do not trust browser extensions, unofficial clients or videos claiming to reveal other users' chats. A tool asking for a session cookie or login token can compromise your account; it does not gain a legitimate creator permission that Character AI withholds.

Are Character AI chats private from other users?

Private conversations are not normally searchable by other Character AI users. Another person cannot open your account history by visiting the same Character. Likewise, a Character's creator cannot see the username-to-transcript relationship through the ordinary creator interface.

Privacy changes when you intentionally publish or share content. Character AI's July 2026 policy says certain actions can make content available to others, including public Characters and public Voices. A shared conversation, screenshot, Feed post or copied transcript leaves the private account context and can be stored or redistributed by recipients.

Check what you are sharing before posting. A role-play excerpt can reveal a username, Character name, personal detail or previous message outside the cropped area. Remove identifying information from both the text and image metadata where appropriate, and assume anything posted publicly can be copied.

What chat information Character AI collects

The July 1, 2026 privacy policy lists several categories that matter to chat privacy:

Data categoryExamples named or implied by the policyWhy it matters
Submitted contentChat communications, posted images or videos, biography descriptions and shared CharactersConversation content is processed by the platform
Voice dataVoice recordings when voice features are usedCalls can involve more sensitive biometric-style content than text
Account informationName, email, phone number, display name, username and date of birthContent may exist alongside an account relationship
Technical informationIP address, device identifiers, User ID, Chat ID, Session ID and usage actionsActivity can be associated with sessions and devices
Support communicationsMessages and files sent to customer supportA support case can expose additional conversation context
Commercial informationPurchases and transaction historySubscription activity is part of the account record

Character AI explicitly tells users not to include sensitive personal information in interactions. Avoid government identification numbers, financial credentials, medical records, private addresses, employer secrets and information about another person who has not consented.

Can Character AI staff read chats?

The current privacy policy does not support the absolute statement that "no human at Character AI can ever access a chat." It says information may be disclosed to employees, consultants, service providers and vendors who need access to perform work on the company's behalf, including customer service, technology support, fraud prevention and content moderation. It also describes using data for safety, security and policy enforcement.

This does not prove that staff routinely browse conversations for entertainment, and it would be misleading to claim that they do. It means the privacy promise is not the same as end-to-end encryption where the provider technically cannot access message content. Platform access should be understood as purpose-limited under the published policy, not impossible.

When contacting support, provide the smallest useful excerpt. A Character ID, Chat ID, timestamp and redacted screenshot may be enough to diagnose a problem without sending an entire intimate history.

Does Character AI use chats to train its models?

Character AI's privacy policy says submitted information can be used to analyze, maintain, improve and customize the service, including training AI and machine-learning models. Its March 2026 training-data documentation also identifies text content and interaction data from users as a data source used by its generative systems.

Character AI publishes a model-training control for users in the EEA and UK. In the app, its documented route is Settings → Data & Privacy → Improve the Model for Everyone. On the web, the route is Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data → Model Improvement. Turning it off prevents new content from being used to train generative models, according to the Help Center.

The company says an opt-out does not prevent every form of processing. Users can still submit feedback, and Character AI may continue using data for search, recommendations, safety classifiers and other service functions. Availability and legal rights can differ by region, so check the control shown in your own account and current regional disclosure.

What happens when you report a Character or response?

Reporting content is a request for the platform to investigate. The exact evidence included can depend on the reporting flow, but users should assume that the reported message, relevant context and associated identifiers may be processed for safety, support or enforcement.

Before sending a report, inspect the confirmation screen and redact unrelated personal information if the interface allows it. Do not add extra intimate history unless it is necessary to explain the violation. A bot creator still does not gain access merely because you report the Character; the report goes through the platform's moderation or support systems.

Keep a copy of the ticket number, Character link and timestamp. If the issue involves imminent danger, criminal activity or exploitation, use appropriate emergency or legal channels rather than relying only on an in-app report.

Are Character AI chats end-to-end encrypted?

Character AI's current public privacy materials describe security measures and data processing, but they do not advertise private chats as end-to-end encrypted in a way that prevents the provider from accessing content. Do not infer end-to-end encryption from the word "private."

Private generally means the conversation is not displayed to the bot creator or ordinary users by default. End-to-end encryption is a technical property in which only the communicating endpoints hold the keys. Because Character AI must generate replies and describes using content for service and model purposes, users should apply the more cautious account-privacy interpretation.

Use a unique password or secure login provider, protect the email account used for authentication, sign out of shared devices and avoid unofficial apps. Account compromise is a more immediate privacy risk than a public Character creator.

How long does Character AI retain chats?

The July 2026 policy says information is retained for the time necessary for the purposes for which it is processed, with duration depending on the purpose and the user's choices. It also says some information may be retained for legal compliance, disputes and enforcement, or later aggregated or anonymized.

This is not a simple fixed promise such as "all chats disappear after 30 days." Account deletion can remove access and trigger deletion processes, but legal, security or de-identified retention may still apply. The policy also says characteristics of a popular public Character can be preserved after its creator deletes an account so other users are not disrupted.

If retention matters to you, request an account data export, review the current policy and submit a privacy request for the rights available in your region. Do not assume that deleting one visible chat necessarily erases every operational record immediately.

Export, delete and manage your Character AI data

Character AI provides an account data export. On the web, go to Profile → Profile Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data → Export data. In the mobile app, open the profile, select settings and choose Export my data. Keep the archive somewhere private because it may contain the conversations you are trying to protect.

Account deletion is separate and permanent. The documented web path ends at Manage Account & Data → Delete Account; the app uses Remove Account. Export before deleting and cancel any paid subscription through its billing owner.

Depending on location, users may also have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to processing. Character AI directs privacy questions and rights requests to its support form or privacy email and may need to verify identity before acting.

A practical privacy checklist

Use these controls before a conversation becomes sensitive:

1. Do not enter passwords, payment credentials, government IDs or precise home and work locations. 2. Avoid sharing health, legal, employment or relationship information that would cause harm if exposed. 3. Use a separate role-play name when your real identity is unnecessary. 4. Check whether the Character, Voice, post or conversation is private before sharing. 5. Review the model-improvement control available to your region. 6. Export important chats and store the archive securely. 7. Redact screenshots before posting them to Reddit, Discord or social media. 8. Use the official app and website and never give an extension your session cookie. 9. Remove Character AI sessions from shared computers and secure the login email. 10. Recheck the privacy policy when the effective date changes.

No checklist makes a cloud AI chat equivalent to an offline diary. The safest rule is to withhold information the service does not need.

Can a Character repeat your private information to another user?

Character AI's official creator-privacy statement means the creator cannot read your transcript. It also says Characters can invent information and should not be treated as reliable people. A similar phrase appearing in someone else's conversation is not, by itself, proof that the bot exposed your chat; generative models can produce overlapping text independently.

Still, do not provide secrets to test whether they will leak. If you see evidence that appears to reproduce uniquely identifying private content, preserve screenshots, Character IDs, Chat IDs and timestamps, stop sharing the content publicly, and submit a privacy/security ticket. Let the platform investigate rather than trying to reproduce exposure across more accounts.

Can the person who made a Character see my messages?

No. Character AI's official Help Center says Character creators can never see the conversations users have with their Characters.

Can other users see my Character AI history?

Not through ordinary use of the same Character. They can see content you deliberately publish, share or expose through an unsecured account or device.

Can Character AI use my conversations for training?

Its policy says user content can be used to improve and train models. Character AI documents a generative-model training opt-out for EEA and UK users, while other processing can continue.

Are deleted Character AI chats immediately erased everywhere?

The privacy policy does not promise immediate removal of every operational, legal or de-identified record. Visible deletion, account deletion and privacy-rights requests have different scopes.

Should I put private information in Character AI?

No. Character AI itself advises users not to submit sensitive personal information. Keep credentials, identity numbers, financial details and confidential third-party information out of chats.
